John,
It’s been one year since we formed our new network to support litigators and their defense teams who provide direct legal representation at second look opportunities. The Second Look Network [[link removed]] is a critical step forward in the fight to end mass incarceration and safely bring more people home. We now have over 250 members from over 102 different organizations [[link removed]] spread across 30 states.
In just one year, we:

We also hosted our 1st in-person conference [[link removed]] in Washington, DC, which was an intensive two-day experience of training sessions, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. The importance of creating these spaces is critical at this moment - most, if not all, of these defenders have been working alone or in siloed environments, with little training and support available. We are changing that. We are building a community.
"Structured and supportive spaces for this kind of work - where organizations across a movement can come together and engage in holistic strategy setting - are few and far between, so the value of this opportunity cannot be overstated. We could not be more grateful to the Second Look Network and The Sentencing Project team for being real leaders in this space, and doing the hard work of mobilizing and organizing a large swath of organizations to work towards a common goal more effectively."

We are focused on continuing this critical work in the year ahead, with more training sessions to improve litigation and mitigation skills, hosting case strategy workshops, and providing more networking and collaboration opportunities. Together, we can ensure that those working to bring more people home have the tools and resources needed to be increasingly successful in their work.
