John, as I write you, Idaho is considering a bill that could gut our Constitution and the rights it protects. If this bill passes, only 5 states will stand between you, me, and utter constitutional chaos.
And it’s not just Idaho we’re up against. Right now, states are considering 71 bills to call an Article V Convention, a dangerous plot that would put our right to peaceful protest, freedom of religion, our right to privacy – essentially the Bill of Rights – at risk.
I know how this might sound. Surely, the entire Bill of Rights can’t be at stake, right? Even though it may sound far-fetched, it is entirely possible. That’s because once enough states call for Article V, there are no rules governing what the Convention can do.
As I write, wealthy special interests are spending millions to pass Article V bills across the country. These same special interests will then be able to use their money to influence legislators if an Article V Convention is called, rewriting the Constitution to their own benefit.
John, if you’re newer to Common Cause, this might be the first time you’re hearing about the Article V plot. That’s all intentional. You see, the special interests and far-right forces behind Article V know their schemes won’t be popular with the public. So they’re working hard to keep Article V out of the public eye while quietly passing bills through states – stealing away our rights before we know what’s hit us.
That’s why we here at Common Cause are shining a spotlight on every attempt to pass Article V as part of our multi-part strategy to protect our Constitutional rights.
And our strategy works. Already this year, we’ve defeated Article V bills in Wyoming and Maine! But John, it’s still early in many state legislative sessions, and I’m anticipating many more Article V bills will be introduced.
These bills move fast, with multiple states introducing and voting on bills every week – sometimes even on the same day! If we’re going to stand a chance against all the new calls for Article V, we’re going to have to pull out all the stops.
