Dear Friend,
On March 26, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that threatens the legal status of mifepristone — a safe and effective abortion medication approved by the FDA over 20 years ago. In that time, mifepristone has been used by over 5 million Americans for abortion and miscarriage care, including thousands of PPMW patients each year.
Make no mistake: medication abortion is essential health care. Attacks on mifepristone’s FDA approval will worsen the health inequities experienced by marginalized communities, including here in the DC metro area.
This attack on mifepristone is a gross injustice that could harm millions of people. As PPMW Chief Medical Officer Dr. Serina Floyd has explained, “If mifepristone goes away, that affects everybody. So even if you’re in a state that has worked to secure [abortion] access…everyone could potentially have access to mifepristone taken away.”
We’ve worked to protect and expand access across Northern Virginia, Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties and DC, but, as we know, DC is not a state. This politically motivated case is a troubling reminder of DC’s precarious position, as DC’s lack of statehood diminishes our ability to protect patients, providers, and essential health care.
PPMW is in urgent need of your support as our advocates mobilize to defend mifepristone access on behalf of the communities we serve. Sign up to volunteer with PPMW or to receive email and text updates, including details on an upcoming rally here in DC to maintain access to medication abortion.
