As you know, last week, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek confirmed that she will sign a bill into law that recriminalizes drug possession and rolls back the progress we achieved with Measure 110.
This will be devastating to people in Oregon.
While this is a major setback, it is also a stark reminder that the change we’re fighting for is not inevitable. It requires consistent collaboration, advocacy, and resources.
Let’s be clear: Recriminalization is extremely harmful, and it is Black, Brown, and low-income communities that will face the consequences of this return to a failed drug war approach. Criminal penalties for drug possession will exacerbate homelessness, addiction, and racial disparities.

Despite the misleading disinformation elected officials have peddled to the public, decriminalization in Oregon was working.
But rather than invest in the future of this innovative, voter-led policy, lawmakers are once again using drugs as a cover for their own failures to deliver stable jobs, affordable housing, quality education, and other vital resources that reduce public suffering. This is a disappointing setback that sets a dangerous precedent for the whole country. But this is not the end. It’s just a detour for our work to decriminalize drugs nationwide.
