Dear John,

The Covid-19 crisis has struck at the very heart of our society, forcing us to self-isolate, but paradoxically at the same time also highlighting our inter-dependency.

This was powerfully illustrated by the words from an ancient Roman poem written on aid packages sent recently from China to Italy: “We are waves from the same sea”.

Although the past weeks have been hugely stressful and difficult, and things will undoubtedly be so for some time to come, I believe the ever growing number of acts of solidarity and kindness are, in the words of US writer Rebecca Solnit, “a glimpse of who else we ourselves may be and what else our society could become."

Together, we can come through this – and make a better future.
