Dear John,

The response to our emergency campaign this week has been incredible - and deeply moving. You've rushed to get involved in so many different ways, and many of you are supporting Crisis for the first time.

Together we've raised £575,000 and it's going up every day!

You’d think social distancing would push us apart, but instead we’re seeing an outpouring of generosity and concern pulling us closer together. And by joining forces, we’re getting vital help to people who are homeless and hit especially hard by the coronavirus outbreak.

  • You’re providing emergency supplies. Thanks to you, we’re distributing packages to people who have been sleeping rough and those in temporary accommodation, like hostels. As well as hygiene essentials like soap and hand sanitiser, the main essentials package contains foods like tuna and pulses for protein, rice and pasta for carbs, and fresh fruit and veg. We’re also providing a wellbeing pack to help people with their mental health too.

With many places now closed, it’s hard to get hold of anything. And without help, the isolation can be frightening. As packages have been delivered, we’ve had so many heartfelt messages of thanks – like this one, from someone you helped in Birmingham:

"Never ever in my life have I known of a better, more caring charity than Crisis. I love you all."

  • Charities joining forces. You’re also helping us fund local groups and organisations like Only a Pavement Away. Normally, this amazing charity helps people move out of homelessness by connecting them with jobs in the hospitality industry. But lockdown means these jobs are being lost. In the short term, your support is helping people pay the rent and avoid homelessness.

  • You’re helping to end homelessness. We have been calling for more protection for people who are homeless. Governments in England and Wales have now asked local councils to give everyone sleeping rough or in night shelters self-contained accommodation straight away. In Scotland, the government has helped people move from shelters into hotel accommodation. There is still more to be done to make sure that people don’t end up back on the streets when this crisis is over, but this is a landmark moment.

With the help of thousands of Crisis supporters, our Cover the Cost campaign has helped secure a major victory. As you may have heard, the government recently announced a £1bn investment into housing benefit for the next year, so that it covers at least the cheapest third of rents. This will help people keep their homes during this crisis, which is a truly amazing result.

We're in this together.

You’ve helped achieve so much in such a short space of time and I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you. You’ve shown that together we can be there for people who are homeless for as long as this outbreak lasts, and beyond.

We’ll keep you updated on what we’re achieving together as more news comes in. Thank you so much again for your incredible support.
