Scientists have determined that Antarctica’s sea ice is melting faster than we thought.
As one example, the “Doomsday Glacier” (which is the size of Florida) could rapidly deteriorate in the next decade causing sea levels to rise by several feet.
For the third consecutive year, sea ice coverage around Antarctica has plummeted to historically low levels, dropping below 2 million square kilometers. This trend represents a significant departure from the norm, with data showing that such low levels of sea ice haven't been recorded since satellite measurements began in 1979.
The “Doomsday Glacier” is the world’s largest glacier and sheds billions of tons of ice into the ocean each year. Scientists trace the glacier’s rapid melting to a powerful El Niño event in the 1940s, but its melting has been expedited by human-made climate change.
A complete collapse of the Doomsday Glacier could raise sea levels by more than 2 feet, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg – this collapse would undermine the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which would raise sea levels by at least 10 feet and cause catastrophic global flooding.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future. But if you'd like to receive fewer emails, we understand. You can click here to only get our most important messages, or you can unsubscribe.
The Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition Political Action Committee (SEEC PAC) is an organization that supports members in the U.S. House of Representatives and candidates who fight for clean energy, climate change solutions, environmental justice, and protection of our nation’s clean air, water, wildlife, and public lands.
