We Must Defend Marriage, Family, and Moral Values
Over the past few decades, marriage has been misunderstood and misaligned with business, education, and politics.
Rather than being perceived as the foundation of a flourishing society, marriage has often become just another optional benefit for self-fulfillment.
As a result, marriage is seen as a mere arrangement, a 50-50 partnership with the purpose of personal pleasure rather than duty and sacrifice.
Simultaneously, the absence of fathers from families has contributed to the dismantling of marriage and our current cultural environment of loneliness and alienation.
According to a University of Texas study, fathers are linked to better outcomes on nearly every measure of a child's well-being: from cognitive development and educational achievement to self-esteem and pro-social behavior.
And statistically, children who grow up with involved fathers are 39% more likely to earn mostly A’s in school, 45% less likely to repeat a grade, 60% less likely to be suspended or expelled from school, twice as likely to go to college and find stable employment after high school, 75% less likely to have a teen birth, and 80% less likely to spend time in jail.
This is the current state of affairs of our nation because we’ve relegated religious and moral values to the private sphere.
Will you partner with us today to protect family, marriage, and moral values by downloading a copy of our book The Christian Family by Herman Bavinck?
A few years ago, we published The Christian Family as a way to start the discussion about marriage, the nuclear family, and moral values. Please click below to download your free copy.
When we published The Christian Family, marriage and the family were already weathering enormous changes, and that trend has not declined.
The absence of moral values in these sacred arenas is a problem that cannot be solved only with more policies.
No increase in the numbers of social policies and no amount of economic intervention or wealth redistribution will solve our cultural decadence. We must change minds and hearts.
And that’s why I’m writing to you—because I suspect this matters to you.
I’m inviting you to join us in protecting these sacred institutions, prerequisites for human flourishing, by taking advantage of the ebook The Christian Family by Herman Bavinck.
It’s through publications like The Christian Family that the Acton Institute challenges bad ideas and educates current and future leaders about the essential moral foundations of society and personal responsibility.
Erroneous ideas have resulted in a colossal attack on marriage, family, and moral values—not just in the United States but throughout the world.
These attacks have come in many forms: local restrictions on parental choice, government-sponsored anti-natalist movements, the redefinition of common truth, and ungodly principles.
And with the growing hostility, the work of the Acton Institute is needed now more than ever.
Will you partner with us today to protect family, marriage, and moral values? Join us in our mission today by downloading a copy of The Christian Family. This book captures perfectly a Christian theology of marriage and the family.
Accessible, thoroughly biblical, and astonishingly relevant, The Christian Family offers a mature and concise handling of the origins of marriage and family life and the effects of sin on these institutions, an appraisal of historic Christian approaches, and an attempt to apply sound theology.
In our mission to build a free and virtuous society, we continue to remind people that the moral health of society depends on the health of family life.
Truly yours,
Kris Alan Mauren
