A message to the community from Garnesha Ezediaro
John,

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities ([link removed]) – a new $200 million initiative that will provide deep support to 25 U.S. cities to address the climate crisis and advance racial wealth equity.
There’s no argument that climate change – which is causing rising temperatures, erosion of ecosystems, and increasingly severe extreme weather – disproportionately impacts communities of color in the U.S., only exacerbating long standing systemic inequities.

About half of all Black people that live in the U.S reside in 11 Southeastern states – a region that has been historically vulnerable to extreme heat, hurricanes, and flooding. According to the Black Wealth Data Center ([link removed]) , Southeastern U.S. counties with Black and Hispanic populations over 30 percent have heightened exposure and risk to natural hazards – increasing those households’ vulnerability to the impacts of climate change.

The federal government has made a historic amount of funding available to local governments, more than $400 billion between the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, that can be used to address the impacts of climate change, particularly in underserved communities. As part of their participation in the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative, these 25 cities will work with valued partners to develop innovative solutions in the buildings and transportation sectors that leverage this federal funding. Potential projects include creating affordable energy-efficient housing, increasing access to clean energy, and investing in electric vehicles and infrastructure.
One of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Greenwood Initiative’s ([link removed]) strategic priorities is to work with local leaders to accelerate racial wealth equity agendas. We’re thrilled to be working alongside our colleagues on the Environment ([link removed]) and Government Innovation ([link removed]) teams on this initiative to help local leaders smartly leverage robust policies and funding to catalyze equitable transformations and build economically thriving communities.
