Sign on to Protect Manufactured Home Safety Standards!
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently proposed a new rule on Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards (the "HUD Code"). The proposal, which addresses numerous items in the code, will be open for comment through March 31. Many of the changes are meaningful. For example, they would revise the definition of "attached accessory building or structure;" require factory-installed carbon monoxide detectors; and change the requirements when attaching carports and garages on site.

The proposed rules will have a significant impact on the role of manufactured home installers, including potential liability for installation work related to accessory buildings and other on-site installation, such as certain appliances the proposal states can be shipped "loose" to the homesite. To ensure that the end buyer or resident of the home has a home that has been safely manufactured, transported and installed, it is vital that all installation documentation is shipped with and remains with the home.
There are some constructive elements in the proposed rule. However, much work by HUD remains to be completed, especially on energy efficiency and other MHCC recommendations.
