Please ask your MP to urge the government to withdraw the new Northern Ireland abortion regulations

 On 25 March, the London Government published its new framework for legal abortion in Northern Ireland. It is difficult to convey the true horror which the new abortion legislation will bring in its wake but some of the worst aspects include:

• Abortion on demand for babies up to 12 weeks
• Abortion up to 24 weeks on unspecified “health” grounds, including claims about the mother’s “financial, relationship or housing issues which impact on the continuance of the pregnancy” — essentially abortion on demand.
• Abortion up to and during birth on grounds of disability.
• No limit for self-induced abortions. A woman who kills her child while giving birth will not commit a criminal offence.
• Doctors who selectively kill a disabled twin or triplet just before or during delivery will not be prosecuted.

These regulations establish a regime even more extreme than that permitted by the Abortion Act 1967 but if they are allowed to stand then they will become the model for the whole of the UK.

SPUC has launched a major campaign in Northern Ireland to repeal section 9 of the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation) Act,(the new abortion legislation)and the restoration of legal protection for unborn children.

 We expect these regulations to be introduced via a Statutory Instrument, which will be debated when Parliament is sitting again. Please ask your MP to vote against this Statutory Instrument, and to speak against this framework whenever it is debated in Parliament.

• The Government’s regulations impose on Northern Ireland one of the most extreme abortion regimes in Europe.
• These regulations lack all legitimacy. Seventy-nine per cent of people who took part in the consultation rejected Government proposals.
• They introduce allow abortion on demand.
• They allow some babies to be aborted up to birth.
• They fail to respect the rights of all health service workers not to be involved in abortion.
• They will introduce abortion provision through schools without the knowledge of parents. This will facilitate child sexual abuse.
• Abortion law is a devolved issue. MPs should support the repeal of Section 9 of the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation, etc) Act and allow the Stormont Assembly to deal with this matter.
• Abortion kills children, it is not healthcare.
