When I ran for Mayor of Salem, we had never elected a woman to lead our city before.

My campaign was underestimated from the start. An at-large city councilor AND the incumbent mayor were both running, and the reality is they were more well known and had more money in their campaign war chests than I did.

I was told to drop out. That I should wait my turn. That Salem wasn't ready for a woman mayor. All the things first-time and women candidates hear far too often.

But I knew I was qualified, and that I had a forward-looking plan that would change Salem for the better. So I didn’t “wait my turn.”

I won. And we proved that with hard work and good ideas - sometimes the underdogs win .

And I haven’t stopped breaking barriers since. In 2022, Maura Healey and I became the first all-woman ticket to lead Massachusetts.

The Governor and I are working hard every day to set an example for the next generation that the time is always right for strong leadership. We made community college FREE for everyone over 25, we’re making Massachusetts more affordable by building thousands of new affordable housing units, and, for the first time in decades, new tax relief efforts are putting millions back into the pockets of families, seniors and taxpayers.

I'm proud of the work we're doing — and none of it would have happened if we had listened when we were told to wait our turns and leave the status quo alone.
