When Speaker of the U.S. House Mike Johnson was asked whether he believes that the destruction of frozen embryos during the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process is murder, he responded, "It's something that we've got to grapple with. It's a brave new world."

The "brave new world" of assisted reproductive technology has been helping Americans start families for more than fifty years. And you would think Mike Johnson, self-proclaimed defender of family values, would support it.

But of course he doesn’t. And of course he doesn't understand the science behind the procedure, or the decades of medical research that made IVF possible. Because all Mike Johnson and his Republican cronies want is to control our bodies, take away our rights, strip us of our autonomy, and send us back to the dark ages.

Last month's Alabama Supreme Court ruling -- that frozen embryos created through IVF are legally children and can therefore be protected as such -- is the latest and most egregious attack on reproductive freedom since the end of Roe v. Wade. And with each of these attacks, it becomes more and more clear: for Republicans, this has only ever been about power over women.
