Chances are you probably aren’t too familiar with New York’s 4th Congressional district but here’s why this race matters. As of 2024, this district, alongside California's 22nd, is the most Democratic-leaning congressional district represented by a Republican.

Since 1997, NY-04 was held by a democrat but that changed in 2022…

During the 2022 midterms, for months leading up to the election, New Yorkers, especially those in the New York City media market, were blanketed with ads solely focused on crime and safety. It wasn’t a conversation based on data but rather an emotional conversation focused on stoking fear. The message was extremely well-funded by GOP dark money donors and extremely consistent.

For the New York state GOP, there was no one better to ride the coattails of this wave of fear over crime than former NYPD detective Anthony D’Esposito who ultimately became their nominee and later victor for NY-04.

As an officer, D’Esposito was alleged to have knowingly lied to a district attorney and grand jury, was accused of falsely arresting plaintiffs into custody without probable cause, and cost taxpayers more than $80k in lawsuit settlements due to his actions. On top of this he received four complaints while in the NYPD, including one for excessive force and one for an improper search for which it was recommended that charges be filed against him.

D’Esposito ran on a hard line anti-crime stance and subscribes to the dangerous style of policing responsible for the drastic decline in relations between police and black and brown communities. Take for instance his stance on pot:

D’Esposito denies that police enforce drug laws in a racially biased way and said if someone was arrested for marijuana possession, “It’s because they deserve to be.” This is despite Black and Latino people making up a disproportionate share of marijuana arrestees in Nassau County and Long Island as a whole (where his district is located).

In Congress, Anthony D’Esposito is an anti-choice MAGA extremist who supports a national abortion ban and tacitly supports Trump’s stolen election lies. He is a crooked cop who is now applying his corrupt and totalitarian approach to law enforcement on our nation and democracy.

New York’s 4th Congressional District is a diverse, highly educated district with a makeup that highly favors democrats. D’Esposito’s win in 2022 could either be a fluke, or a dangerous new trend of Democrats losing extremely safe seats. We cannot let that happen.

President Biden enjoyed a 14.6% margin of victory here and the district's 2020 congressional candidate carried this district by 19.4 points. We can take back this seat in 2024 but we are going to need your help to do it.
