We’ve all heard it before: “Jill Stein cost Hillary the election”, “a Green candidate will get Trump elected”, “we have to vote for the lesser of two evils”, and so on.



This propaganda about “spoilers” is one of the biggest obstacles to overcoming the failed two-party system, and we hear it all the time: from the corporate media and political establishment, and sometimes from our friends, family, and neighbors who’ve been told over and over that we can’t have more than two parties to choose from.

A Gallup poll in September 2023 found that 63% of US voters agree that the Democratic and Republican parties do such a poor job representing the people that a new major party is needed - and that was even before they joined forces to support the genocidal war on Gaza.



Yet despite their unpopularity, the parties of war and Wall Street maintain an almost total stranglehold on our government, a concentration of power and control that’s unheard of among modern democracies. The two-party system maintains its control by relentlessly berating people to vote for the “lesser of two evils” out of fear, and by attacking anyone outside those two evils as a “spoiler”.



As Jill points out, the “spoiler” charge is not just an attack on democracy, it’s a mode of control to get voters like you to give up your power and hand it over to the political establishment for nothing in return. It’s also a form of voter suppression to intimidate people into not voting for what they want - or even not voting at all.



“Lesser of two evils” voting creates a race to the bottom where both parties keep getting worse, while the elites keep insisting that things can’t be any better. But with skyrocketing inequality, climate crisis and the growing threat of global nuclear war, we can’t waste any more time hoping that the two-party system that got us into this mess is somehow going to fix it.



What makes the “spoiler” charge even more ridiculous is that if the ruling parties were really concerned about “splitting the vote”, there’s a simple solution called Ranked-Choice Voting that has already passed in over 50 communities around the country and several states. But instead of asking why the people in power won’t pass a simple solution to solve an issue they complain endlessly about, too often the media repeats the establishment’s attacks on candidates and voters who step outside the two-party trap.



Here’s the good news: the number of US voters who are sick and tired of the two-party system has never been higher. We have an unprecedented opportunity to overcome the “spoiler” propaganda and build an unstoppable movement for real democracy.
