In 2020, when we spoke with voters about Trump’s climate-killing policies, their votes shifted in a serious way — as much as a 20-point swing in some places — and helped deliver battleground states to Biden. We have proof that these early conversations to persuade voters really change minds. But we don’t stop there. When it comes to voter turnout, our organizers help educate voters on the process of requesting and returning vote-by-mail ballots. They help voters make a voting plan by giving them precinct-specific information. For voters who vote by mail, our organizers follow up by mail, phone, and again at their doors to make sure their ballots are submitted and counted on time. We aim to make three passes on each voter’s door on our list. And the strategy works. In 2022, we ran some of the biggest field programs in Michigan and Pennsylvania, and independent researchers measured an increase of between four and five percent in turnout among the voters we targeted. In 2024, we will again work in states that will decide this election, and these will again be decided by a small number of votes. But, Friend, as things stand, the kind of voter outreach that could stop Trump — and win this election for the environment — is currently underfunded.
