Hi John,
As we enter the second week of lockdown here in the UK, I thought I would share a few ideas of ways to empower yourself, learn new skills and promote equality and respect in your community.
1. Share something positive
It seems like it’s impossible to turn on the news right now without being bombarded by negative news coverage. Why not share some good news on your own social channels with your friends and family to bring some positivity to your day?
Where there are people, there's hope – even in times of a global pandemic. Our common humanity unites us all.

2. Educate yourself
While you’re stuck indoors, take ourfree course

Want to take some time to brush up on your human rights knowledge? We have a whole Human Rights Academy dedicated to exactly that.
On our Academy, you can:
Take an introduction course on the core concepts of human rights.
Come face-to-face with human rights activists in this course on Freedom of Expression.
Learn what a human rights defender is, and become one yourself.

3. Get involved in our urgent campaigns
Unfortunately, Covid-19 doesn’t prevent human rights abuses from happening all over the world. In fact, many vulnerable people are finding themselves at higher risk than ever before.
We are continuing our work campaigning for brave people around the world standing up for human rights. Find our latest actions here.

4. Have a look at our “how-to” tutorials
We have broken down some serious human rights issues into easily viewable videos. Teach yourself how to spot fake news, stay safe on social media or protest peacefully.

5. Show solidarity, care for others, volunteer
At times like this, there are many ways you can help in your community:
Follow health workers’ advice and social distancing guidelines. It helps protect the most vulnerable people in your communities and eases the burden on carers and hospitals.
Provide emotional support for people via phone calls or messages. This can be an extremely lonely time for many. Call people and provide them with support.
Volunteer to go to the shops for neighbours that may be elderly or with a disability, while observing social distancing.
And remember, whatever you do: Stay safe.

Every supporter donation, however big or small, is so valuable.
Like many not-for-profit organisations, some of our fundraising has been affected by Covid-19 - events are postponed, our book shops are closed and other fundraising activities have been halted in the interests of the health of our staff, volunteers and the public. Amnesty International UK depends on the generosity of our supporters to fund our ongoing fight for human rights. Our usual work must continue, and we must now also ensure emergency laws protect the most vulnerable during this time . Every supporter donation, however big or small, is so valuable.
If you are able to help, please chip in today and help the fight for humanity and human rights continue.
