There’s a lot happening in shareholder advocacy – As You Sow continues to face attacks from the fossil fuel-backed far right and there’s disappointing news from the SEC, with the new Climate Disclosure Rule not requiring disclosures of Scope 3 GHG emissions. These challenges are ongoing and require a lot of our attention, but we are not letting them interrupt our fundamental work. They cannot stop the achievements and powerful progress we’re excited to share this month– take a look –

Hormel Commits to Reduce Packaging & Plastic

Following a shareholder resolution < [link removed] > from As You Sow, Hormel Foods agreed to cut packaging by 10 million pounds by 2030 and form an industry working group to advance circular packaging policy. Because of this agreement, As You Sow withdrew the resolution.

“We applaud Hormel’s new commitments towards achieving a circular economy for packaging and eagerly await its first circular economy for packaging report this fall,” said Kelly McBee, As You Sow’s Circular Economy Manager.

This engagement demonstrates growing action toward extended producer responsibility (EPR), shifting the responsibility to build and maintain recycling infrastructure away from municipalities and onto the companies that generate the packaging.

Carbon Clean 200 Companies Outperform Dirty Energy by 39%

In February, As You Sow and Corporate Knights released the 11th update of the Carbon Clean200™ < [link removed] > , a list of 200 publicly traded companies leading the way among global peers to a clean energy future.

These companies generated 39% greater returns versus a fossil fuel index from July 2016 to January 2024, earning over $2 trillion in 2022 and generating a total return of 104%.

“The clean energy future is now the clean energy present. The scale and global diversity of leading companies continue to expand and redefine the term ‘cleantech’ to be any company with products and services that will reduce demand for fossil fuels and water,” said As You Sow’s CEO, Andrew Behar.

Companies from 35 countries are represented with top contributors including sustainably certified tech hardware, high-efficiency HVAC systems, and water quality and wastewater treatment equipment.

Tell Congress – “Stop blocking corporate climate progress”

Last month, As You Sow’s President and Chief Counsel Danielle Fugere was called to Washington, DC to face questioning by the House Judiciary Committee in person, under oath, for nearly eight hours. Next up is As You Sow’s CEO, Andrew Behar, who will be testifying later this month.

Our friends at Green America have been watching these attacks on As You Sow with great concern. They created an online letter-writing campaign < [link removed] > telling Congress to stop trying to block corporate progress on climate. Will you stand with As You Sow?

The letters, which have now reached over 16,000, will also act as a petition that Andrew will present to the Committee on March 28. Take a look < [link removed] > – we’d love for you to join the action.Thank you, as always, for being the reason our impact is greater than ever. Together, we’re making incredible progress supporting corporations to bring about a clean energy future and circular economy. Meanwhile, we’re pushing for the freedom to invest in climate-related action as a fundamental part of our thriving world and economy. Thank you!
