Electric vehicles (EVs) are often advertised as a clean, environmentally-friendly alternative to gasoline-powered cars. However, recent reports suggest that EVs may actually produce more harmful particulate pollution than their gas counterparts.
The Wall Street Journal recently published a terrific article that dives into some of these flaws. I would encourage you to read it.
The bulk of this pollution comes not from the tailpipe but from tire wear. EVs weigh significantly more due to their heavy battery packs, causing their tires to wear down faster and shed more toxic particles onto roads and into waterways. One study found tire particulate emissions from EVs were nearly 400 times higher than exhaust emissions.
Despite this evidence, regulators have downplayed or ignored the tire wear issue in their relentless push to phase out gas vehicles.
California has even made the questionable claim that future EVs will somehow offset their battery weight with unspecified weight reductions, allowing tire wear to remain on par with gas cars. The state has provided little evidence for this assumption that flies in the face of physics and automotive trends.
As EV adoption ramps up, it is far more likely that their excessive tire pollution will offset or even exceed the particulate reductions stemming from eliminating tailpipe emissions.
