How to cut through immigration spin for accurate, thoughtful coverage |
Journalists need resources to help them push past political talking points and get to the heart of America's ongoing immigration story.
That's why Poynter's Beat Academy will convene this week for a powerful 90-minute webinar designed to give journalists sources, data, resources and story ideas to cover this issue in their communities —whether they live in Texas, California, New York, or anywhere in between.
“Immigration in Focus” is set for this Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern.
You will see how the Texas busing program exposes weak spots in legal immigration; learn how to identify the industries and employers who are seeking immigrant workers in their area; and sharpen your understanding of the rules and steps of legal immigration.
Enrollees in this week's session won't merely get great information on how to cover immigration for their own audiences. They can also apply to attend a two-day workshop in June in El Paso, Texas, where journalists will get a close look at the many facets of legal and illegal border crossings.
Enrolling in this week's session (or watching a replay if you can't make it in person) means you'll be qualified to compete for one of 20 spots in this expenses-paid reporting workshop, thanks to the Catena Foundation, which will include time with non-profit service providers, a customs and border patrol tour, and discussions with experts in the legal, social and employment patterns of recent arrivals.
Beat Academy, which helps America's journalists cover the evolving and emerging topics that impact their communities, is just $75 for the entire eight-pack of training sessions or $50 each for five or more individuals.
You can attend as many or as few webinars as you like for one price. Enroll now, and scroll down to see more Poynter offerings. |
