Two weeks from today, our reproductive freedom will be at the mercy of career lawyers and judges with no medical credentials. Again. These judges have no right to tell pregnant people what’s best for their bodies. Again.
We never voted for them. But they can enforce — and have enforced — bans on our bodies.
On March 26, the United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine. The case asks justices to decide whether the FDA’s approval of mifepristone — one of two drugs commonly used for medication abortions — will be revoked.
Let’s be clear: Mifepristone is scientifically shown to be safe and effective. Study after study has found that more than 99 percent of pregnant people who take this medication experience no serious complications.
But now, the drug’s future — and possibly the future of the FDA’s regulatory authority — depends on nine unelected justices whom the majority of the American public does not trust or approve of.
This is a monumental case with dire implications for everyone in the entire country, especially the tens of thousands of pregnant people who use mifepristone every year for medication abortions.
And we aren’t safe here in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of a ban, it will block access to mifepristone nationwide. It would supersede the abortion care protections that we, together, have worked so hard to put in place right here at home.
We demand that SCOTUS unequivocally uphold the FDA’s current approval of mifepristone.
Any other ruling is a ban on our reproductive health care.
They won’t stop there. In April, SCOTUS will hear a case on whether states can ban abortions for pregnant people even in emergency circumstances to stabilize the patient.
How in the hell did we get here? And how far will the Supreme Court’s obsession with pregnant bodies go?
