Here Comes the Boom

What to Know: The coronavirus pandemic could soon peak and then subside, experts say.

The TPPF Take: We should be planning now to get our economy back to work.

“We don’t have to choose; we can make every effort to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the virus, and we can roll up our sleeves,” says TPPF’s Kevin Roberts. “In recent weeks, our nation’s focus has been fixated on our health, and that has been right and appropriate. But in coming days, we need to recognize that lasting damage is being done to our economy and we must respond accordingly.”

We’re Confused, Too

What to Know: Inconsistent “shelter in place” orders issued by cities and counties are confusing workers and confounding the Texas economy.

The TPPF Take: Orders like Austin’s should be narrowly tailored and clear.

“These orders fail to balance the public health needs with the government commands that limit our civil liberties and have already forced thousands to lose their jobs,” says TPPF’s Rob Henneke. “And these rules make little sense to most Austinites, particularly those who are out of work because of the decree.”

Pandemics and Prices

What to Know: President Trump points out that even during a public health crisis, price transparency is a vital part of health care reform.

The TPPF Take: The more transparency, the better, even now.

“In a free market, price is considered to be like the central nervous system,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “It responds with great immediacy to market forces, and adjusts to fluctuations in supply and demand. Without price transparency, health care delivery market has, in effect, had its central nervous system removed. Restoring transparency will help restore the heart of health care, which is the doctor and patient relationship.”
