An alarming increase in child labor violations—with cases soaring by 283% since 2015—and heart-wrenching stories of young lives lost in preventable workplace accidents highlight the critical need for child labor reform. Yet, GOP lawmakers are attempting to dismantle essential safeguards, posing a grave risk to the safety and well-being of our children.

There has been a concerning trend among the GOP, with more states introducing bills aimed at rolling back safeguards that have long shielded our children from exploitation and harm. The exploitation of children not only revives images of a bygone era devoid of basic worker protections, but also disproportionately impacts children of color and those from low-income families, exacerbating existing racial and income inequalities. With lawmakers in at least 11 Republican-led states attempting to relax child labor laws, we must act now.

We must safeguard our children's futures against the backdrop of economic interests that threaten to undermine decades of progress in child labor law enforcement. It's time we protect children from exploitation and create a future where every child is granted the safety, education, and opportunities they rightfully deserve.

Our children are the future of our nation and deserve to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment. We must protect them from exploitation and ensure their right to a childhood.
