Friend, there are more than 640 million women and girls alive today who were married as children.

As communities grapple with the global economic crisis, political instability, humanitarian emergencies and more, adolescent girls are being placed at risk.

Child marriage is a global human rights violation — robbing girls of their education, health and opportunity. Child brides are exposed to a greater risk of abuse and exploitation, and are often trapped in a cycle of poverty.

This all-too-common practice is a vast worldwide issue, but it doesn't just happen far away. It takes place right here in the United States — and it must end.

Urge legislators to pass legislation to take immediate action to end child marriage with zero exceptions.

UNICEF believes that no girl should ever be a bride, and that all children deserve a happy and healthy childhood.

Currently, only eleven U.S. states — Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington — prohibit marriage before the age of 18 with no exceptions.

But until every state enacts legislation to protect children from being married, thousands of young girls in the United States remain at risk.

That’s why UNICEF USA is dedicated to ending child marriage globally and locally, right here in the U.S., with the ultimate goal of ensuring that girls fully enjoy their childhood free from the risk of child marriage.

We need you with us, Friend.
