Dear John,
The past week has been a whirlwind for us, and for the rest of the immigration community.
Coming off dueling border visits by President Biden and former president Trump ahead of the State of the Union, public polling has continued to show that immigration issues are dominating this year.

Here are a few other highlights from the Council’s work the past week:
An Unconstitutional Texas Law Was Put on Hold
On March 4th, the Supreme Court temporarily stopped a Texas law called SB4 from taking effect. The law would empower state law enforcement in Texas to enforce federal immigration law, a dangerously unconstitutional and anti-immigrant move. We’ve been fighting this bill in Texas, and we’re mobilizing against copycat bills in other states.

We Testified Before Congress
The Council’s Policy Director, Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, was called to testify before the House immigration subcommittee about the legal limits of the president’s power when it comes to the border. He explained why an unusual new theory—that the president can simply use an existing 1952 law to suspend asylum at the border—does not hold water.

We Set the Table—And You’re Invited
We proudly launched a new PSA, “Shared Table,” with our partners at The Ad Council and the Team Up Project through the Belonging Begins with Us campaign to encourage people to connect across difference in their local communities. Watch the video, take the quiz, and find local opportunities to start building bridges with others.

Your Support Matters
All of that was just one week in March—and 2024 will only demand more and more from immigration experts like the Council. We’ll be there every day with litigation, policy work, research, and advocacy to champion the common-sense solutions that will help build immigration system we all deserve.
