Friends,
I’ve been reflecting on President Biden’s State of the Union speech, and it’s remarkable just how far we’ve come as a nation over the past three years.
When President Biden first took office in January 2021, we were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that claimed the lives of over a million Americans, the worst economic downturn since 2008, and a political crisis that threatened our very democracy.
But as soon as he was sworn in, he immediately got to work with me and my colleagues in Congress to take action. We quickly passed the American Rescue Plan that got more than 200 million Americans vaccinated against COVID and provided immediate relief to families and small businesses struggling to make ends meet through the pandemic.
Building on this major win, we passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that’s creating thousands of good paying jobs and providing much needed investments into our crumbling roads, bridges, and water systems. Later, the Biden administration worked with Democrats in Congress to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, one of the largest investments in the American economy, energy security, and climate in the nation’s history.
To finally address the scourge of gun violence that has plagued our communities, we passed the first major gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. We also passed several key pieces of legislation aimed at tackling the growing mental health and addiction crisis, including two bills I introduced: the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Reauthorization Act, which ensures the continuation and strengthening of community-based youth suicide prevention efforts, and the MATE Act, which requires providers who prescribe highly addictive medications be trained to spot the signs of addiction and advise patients on treatment.
And friends, these policies are working. With record job creation, record low unemployment, increasing wages, and decreasing inflation fueled by American workers and manufacturers, the United States is better positioned than anyone in the world to win the 21st Century.
I’m so proud of how much we’ve achieved together – but the truth is, there is a lot more that needs to be done. While we’ve secured many wins for working families, we cannot deny the major setbacks we’ve seen for reproductive rights since the Supreme Court’s disastrous ruling to overturn Roe in 2022. Dozens of GOP-led states enacted strict abortion bans in the months following, and now, access to contraception and even in vitro fertilization (IVF) is being cracked down on by Republicans across the country.
President Biden made it clear that he is all-in in the fight to protect women’s freedom to make our own decisions about our health and our family. As someone who turned to IVF as my last resort to start a family, I know his refusal to back down in the face of extreme Republican abortion bans hit home for every woman wondering if their state would be next to rip fertility treatments away from them like we’ve seen in Alabama. It’s why I chose Dr. Pietro Bortoletto as my guest at the State of the Union, the Director of Reproductive Surgery at Boston IVF where I underwent IVF treatment for five years to make my dream of having a family come true.
As the President promised, we will not stop until we fully restore Roe .
Whether it’s securing our reproductive rights, restoring the assault weapons ban to ensure no civilian has access to weapons of war, defending vital programs like Social Security and Medicare, or increasing investments in mental health care services, I’m committed to continuing the work to build a better America for the future generations.
And to do that, we need to ensure we send President Biden a Democratic House this November. Will you chip in now to help us FINISH THE JOB and take back the House in 2024? [[link removed]]
