The migrant crisis has brought New York City to a tipping point. The strain on the system to house, feed and educate these asylum seekers is stretching the city’s social safety net to the limit.
New York City needs help and the federal government that caused this problem in the first place is nowhere to be found. However, the state also bears responsibility for this mess.
It is unfair and coupled with the post-pandemic stress that includes outmigration, increased crime and homelessness, high commercial vacancy rates and high taxes, the city is on the brink. And as the city is still the main driver of revenue in this state, we’re in real danger of killing the golden goose.
I wrote about this issue in an Op-ed published today in City & State, and discussed it this weekend in an address before congregants at the Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church in the South Bronx. You can watch that below.
