In 2022, we shared the troubling story of C.J. Rice. The young man who in 2011 was falsely accused — and then wrongfully convicted — of having shot four people in Philadelphia. Despite having a clearly inept lawyer, pleas from family and friends, and proof from his doctor that he physically could not have committed the crime, Rice was given the egregious sentence of 30-60 years behind bars. He’s been there ever since.

RiceLast year, a US District judge ruled that Rice had received ineffective counsel during his trial and ordered the Philadelphia District Attorney to either retry him or set him free1. The judge gave the DA 180 days to make their decision. Well, the clock has been ticking, in fact more than half of those 180 days have passed.
Yet, we cannot simply hope. We must continue to share C.J.’s story and push the DA to do the right thing. That’s why we are asking you to take action and support our petition for #JusticeforCJRice.
