FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE?? March 10, 2024?? Contact: [email protected]??? ? Gov. Whitmer Proclaims March 11 to April 9 as the Month of Ramadan in Michigan? ? LANSING, Mich.? ? Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a proclamation recognizing March 11 through April 9 as the month of Ramadan in Michigan.?? ? ?The month of Ramadan has always been a time of deep spiritual reflection, increased charity, long nights filled with prayer, and time shared with family and friends,? said Governor Whitmer. ?This year, a traditionally joyous holiday feels different, as Michigan families also come together to pray for lasting peace amid so much suffering in Gaza. We mourn with Michiganders who have lost loved ones. Michigan is stronger because of the Muslim community, and we will continue to wrap our arms around you and wish you a blessed Ramadan.?? ? ? The Institute for Social Policy and Understanding reported that Michigan Muslims provided 24,000 social services for families in need, made more than 1,600 new inventions, contributed $5.5 billion to the economy, created 100,000 jobs, and gave $177 million in charitable contributions.?? ? ?Many members of the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community will be observing Ramadan this year,? said Rebeka Islam, executive director of Asian American Pacific Islander Vote, appointee on the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission. ?Ramadan is a time of celebration, reflection, faith and unity. The commitment of the Muslim community to education, social services, interfaith dialogue, and civic engagement has not only fostered a more inclusive society but has also paved the way for future generations to thrive.?? ? ?As we welcome the holy month of Ramadan, we celebrate a time of deep reflection, renewal, and community,? said Bilal Hammoud, executive director of the Arab American Chamber of Commerce. ?Traditionally, Ramadan brings us closer to our faith and each other, fostering an environment of support and unity. This year, our observance is marked by a somber spirit as we reflect on the resilience and solidarity that guide us through times of great loss, embodying the values of humanity and compassion.?? ? "Ramadan serves not only as a time of spiritual reflection and renewal for Muslims in Michigan, but also underscores their significant economic contributions," said Wafa Dinaro, executive director of the New Economy Initiative, appointee on the Michigan Finance Authority Board of Directors. "As we embrace the values of compassion, generosity, and unity during this holy month, let us also recognize the vital role that the Muslim community plays in driving economic growth and fostering diversity within our state. Muslim entrepreneurs continue to accomplish significant growth and scaling of their businesses as they contribute to a state that holds over 900,000 small businesses."? ? ?By embracing the rich diversity within the Muslim community during Ramadan, we aim to show our neighbors the value of inclusivity and learning from one another as a pathway to building a stronger, more cohesive community,? said Seydi Sarr, founder, African Bureau of Immigration and Social Affairs (ABISA), appointee on Black Leadership Advisory Council. ?Ramadan Kareem.?? ? ?As Appointments Head of Engagement, I work with our team to ensure our boards and commissions are reflective of our diverse Michigan communities,? said Sumaiya Ahmed Sheikh, appointments head of engagement. ?Governor Whitmer has done an extraordinary job appointing Michiganders who have diverse experience, skill set, and thought. I am grateful to have a hand in making sure everyone has a seat at the table. This is how we make it Michigan. Ramadan Mubarak!?? ? PROTECTING PLACES OF WORSHIP? Amid rising threats against the Muslim community last year, Governor Whitmer led a group of governors to send a joint letter to congress, urging an increase in security funding for places of worship. The letter called for an increase to the federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program to ensure resources reach the communities that need assistance.???? ?
