16%. That’s the percentage of Americans who trust that the government will do what is right most of the time, according to a Pew Survey from last year. Americans are as cynical about politics as they’ve ever been, and headlines like this one make it easy to see why:
Business Insider published this piece about former Congressman Mike Rogers, one of Elissa’s top opponents in this race. It details nearly a decade's worth of lucrative speaking gigs, board positions, and large payments from multinational corporations – including some with connections to China. According to public filings, he went from a net worth of somewhere between approximately $800,000 and $1.7 million when he left Congress to a net worth as high as $17.5 million just 10 years later — that’s a 2,105% increase!
To be an elected official is to carry the public’s trust, and when career politicians like Rogers’ parlay that trust into small fortunes, it’s easy to see why regular Americans lose confidence in the system.
Government transparency is important to Elissa, because it’s at the heart of restoring faith in our democracy and convincing Michiganders that their interests come first. That’s why she has worked in Congress to lead on bills like the TRUST in Congress Act, bipartisan legislation that would ban members of Congress from trading stocks while in office; the Cryptocurrency Accountability Act, to require members to disclose any and all cryptocurrency holdings they have; and the Ban Corporate PACs Act, to eliminate the influence of corporate money in our system.
These measures are common sense to the average person — Elissa knows it and Michiganders know it. But people like Mike Rogers haven’t seemed to figure it out.
