The increasing prominence of artificial intelligence (AI) has presented a disturbing new problem: political deepfakes. This new technology allows online trolls to create hyper-realistic forgeries to impersonate political figures and could cause irreparable damage to our democracy.
Already, a deep fake audio clip of President Joe Biden’s voice has been used in an attempt to suppress the vote before the primary election in New Hampshire.
We’ve got to act now. Join us and sign the petition to demand the Congress introduce and pass legislation to combat the production of dangerous political deepfakes.
Deepfake technology is rapidly becoming more accessible and believable, and we don’t have much time to act before it takes over. Illinois’ Protect Elections from Deceptive AI Act should serve as a blueprint for preventative legislation. It would mandate that any AI-generated political content must be disclosed as such. This would allow voters to make informed decisions and determine which messages are authentic and which are misinformation.
Congress has to act before it’s too late: it’s time to establish a legal framework that will address this technological threat and fight to preserve truth and journalism online.
