A dozen years since it last threatened to croak, the global economy is again in a very, very bad way. American senators and the White House are prepared to keep its most vital organ, the United States, in a vat, on life support — to the tune of two trillion dollars, the largest relief package in the country’s history. But regardless of the bloated scale of the bill and the bulging apparatus that it buys, with such a dismal health report, one wonders how long this unnatural form of life can be sustained — and what will replace it after its inevitable doom.
 
Might it be best to retire the old junker before it takes the world down with it?
 
A new creature may be born, an economy that can sustain human life without the agonies of penury, predation, and planet-death. To put capitalism out of its misery in its darkest hour could be a historic kindness. And as we dance around the corpse (a safe six feet between us), we might then find the mettle to make this crisis the last of its kind.

What will we do when the crisis begins to wane? Will we go back to business as usual, like we did after the 2008 meltdown and all the meltdowns before it? Will we let the corpse of capitalism twitch back to life one more time? Or this time, will we the people, with the most revolutionary tool ever invented in the palms of our hands, finally get our act together and bury the maggot-ridden body forever?
