WE ACT for Environmental Justice is thrilled to announce a $1 million federal allocation for the development of its Environmental Justice Center thanks to Majority Leader of the United States Senate Charles Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. The Senators secured the funding as part of the Fiscal Year 2024 federal appropriations legislation passed last night.
This major federal commitment to our Environmental Justice Center builds upon a $775,000 grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. And importantly, we’ve also received gifts from hundreds of individual donors like you, totaling over $800,000 – with gifts ranging from $150,000 to as little as $10.
We’re proud of this diverse range of public and private supporters, major donors, and grassroots donors. We still need your support to meet our $7.3 million capital campaign goal, to bring an important new resource for environmental justice education and training to our community. Help us build on this momentum by making a contribution today.
With the new Environmental Justice Center, WE ACT will strengthen our ability to serve as a movement-builder, sharing our knowledge, experience, and best practices, along with capacity-building resources, including funding, with allies across the country. The Center will be a convening space and technical assistance hub for environmental justice organizations and other grassroots advocates. With a permanent space to call our own, equipped with the technology for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) education and citizen science, we’ll also scale up our community-based education, workforce development, and civic engagement efforts that directly empower Northern Manhattan residents.
Environmental Justice Center Features:
• Two floors dedicated to educational and training programs.
• Up-to-date technology and equipment for Science, Technology, Energy, Arts, and Math (STEAM) education.
• Outdoor space for citizen science activities.
• Two conference rooms to host convenings and technical assistance trainings.
• Flexible office space for use by staff and in civic engagement campaigns such as get-out-the-vote.
