With Ramadan just around the corner, we are so excited to share the launch of our fundraising campaign for the Muslim Musical Mosaic Project with you!
As Muslims all around the world prepare for Ramadan, a month of fasting, reflection, prayer, and community, we also keep in our hearts the excitement about the celebration of Eid, or Hari Raya as it's known in my home country, Malaysia. We feel this excitement even more here at MPV and specifically in the Mosaic Project Team, a community of artists from across the United States, at the thought that one day, we will be able to offer a Muslim musical celebratory event for Muslim Americans to attend with their families and friends to honor the diversity and richness of the American Muslim musical culture.
The Muslim Musical Mosaic Project is a chance for Muslims for Progressive Values to do just this by convening local scholars, cultural producers, activists, musicians, and nonprofit representatives in an exploration of how music manifests in existing Muslim communities in Los Angeles (and nationwide), and how American Muslim cultural producers understand and interpret their various diverse traditions in the musical work they listen to, create and produce. This project will culminate in a staged event for the Los Angeles public featuring a panel discussion fused with musical performances that feature a diverse and rare glimpse into the inner workings of that new American Muslim musical culture.
To make this a reality though, we need your help! We were honored to receive a grant from California Humanities to convene the scholars and artists but we need your help to match that $14,000 grant enabling us to compensate musicians, record and document the inception of the project. Can you make a donation below to help support a new American Muslim musical tradition?
