Hi John,
Throughout Women’s History Month, and especially on today, International Women’s Day, I want to celebrate all those who came before me who helped make my service in Congress even possible.
Today, I am grateful for the leaders from our community like Kimberlé Crenshaw, Betty Sutton, Ilene Shapiro, and First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley who unapologetically took a stand for women’s rights and freedoms. And I never forget that it is thanks to the tireless work and fearless advocacy of Black leaders, like Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and Stephanie Tubbs Jones, that a Black woman like me is able to serve as a member of the United States Congress.
But all across the country, women’s rights are under attack. The fight for women’s rights, freedoms, and equality continues as we work to protect access to reproductive healthcare and the ability for women to make their own healthcare decisions, expand childcare, eliminate the wage gap, and so much more.
This month and every month, I’m committed to channeling the power of those who came before me to continue opening doors, shattering glass ceilings, and building a more inclusive future.
I am so excited for the future and all we can accomplish together — but I need you with me over these critical next few months.
Happy International Women’s Day — thanks for all you do.
Emilia
