Kitsap County's Draft Critical Areas Ordinance Available for Public Review
A preliminary draft version of the Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) is available for public review as of March 8, 2024. The draft CAO and associated change matrix can be found on the project's webpage: kcowa.us/cao.
- Public comment may be submitted through a form provided on the CAO webpage, or may be sent via email directly to [email protected].
- The initial public comment period on draft code amendments will run through? ? ? ? ? April 26, 2024. Comments received by that date will be reviewed by staff, compiled, and summarized for the Planning Commission.
- The full public comment period extends through the date of the Planning Commission public hearing, which is tentatively scheduled for May 21, 2024. Written testimony may be provided at any time up until that date to be included in the record.
The periodic review and update of the County?s Critical Areas Ordinance is conducted in accordance with best available science, updated State guidance, and changes in State law. The intent of the CAO is to, in part, protect critical areas and their functions and values; preserve the habitat, water quality, and water quantity functions and values of wetlands; guide development proposals to the most environmentally suitable and stable portion of a development site; and prevent cumulative adverse environmental impacts to critical areas.
All proposed edits are related to Title 19 (Critical Areas).

The Critical Areas Ordinance is targeted for adoption in September of 2024.
