The hypocrisy is hard to take: In an article in the Detroit News this week, Former Congressman Mike Rogers, one of our 4 serious opponents, refused to commit on the record to supporting legislation to protect IVF federally – despite tweeting his support for IVF in the wake of the Alabama Supreme Court ruling. It’s just another example of why we need to believe candidates like Mike Rogers and other Republicans when they have shown us time and again exactly who they are.

Let’s review the bidding:

Rogers has a decades-long record as an anti-choice politician, including co-sponsoring 4 bills that would have had the same effect as the Alabama Supreme Court decision, making it impossible for millions of couples to grow their families. In the House of Representatives, he voted with his party 100% of the time on abortion-related issues.

His fellow Michigan Republican Senate candidates are no better:

• Former Congressman Peter Meijer, has campaigned on being “100% pro-life” even in cases of rape or incest, supported a federal ban on abortion, and co-sponsored a bill that would have prevented the disposal of frozen IVF embryos.


• Businessman Sandy Pensler says he is “a pro-life conservative;” called Roe v. Wade a “terrible decision,” and claimed that Prop 3 in Michigan, which protected the right to choose in Michigan’s Constitution, “went too far.”


• Former Congressman Justin Amash received an A+ rating from National Right to Life, an extreme anti-choice organization. In the Michigan House of Representatives he co-sponsored legislation to restrict IVF, subjecting clinics to onerous requirements and requiring them to share data about patient miscarriages with the state.

Meanwhile, despite trying to smooth over their talking points, their party’s agenda on reproductive freedom is clear, from attacks on servicemembers’ ability to travel to receive abortion care to a pending Supreme Court decision that could we ban the mailing of mifepristone across state lines – a safe and legal drug that has been widely used for over two decades for women having miscarriages, D&Cs, medically necessary terminations and abortions. As the most common method of abortion, such a decision on mifepristone would limit access for women in states that have protected abortion—like Michigan. There’s no reason to think IVF is safe. Democrats introduced a bill to protect IVF nationwide. It has zero Republican co-sponsors in the House and was blocked in the Senate by Republicans last week.

The anti-choice movement spent 50 years chipping away at the federal right to an abortion. And now they’re continuing to chip away at reproductive freedom in all its forms, in all 50 states.

Our opponents spent decades in lockstep with their party on this issue, taking vote after vote to restrict choice. Today, Republicans see where the political winds are blowing and claim to support IVF, but politicians like Mike Rogers don’t even have the moral courage to say they’d support federal legislation protecting it.

The path to filibuster reform and a Democratic Senate (not to mention the White House) all run through Michigan. These types of decisions—whether and how to grow a family—are as personal as they come. I’ll always vote to protect Michiganders’ rights to make the decision that’s right for their family, and unlike some of my opponents, I’ve got the record to back it up.
