John,
As Women's History Month unfolds, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of women who have fearlessly shaped the legal landscape, breaking long-standing barriers and paving the way for progress. From the first woman to practice law in the U.S. to the first Black woman to ascend to the bench, these pioneers shattered glass ceilings and ignited a flame of change that burns brightly.
Their contributions have redefined the legal landscape, inspired generations, and fueled the ongoing fight for justice and equality. This month, we find inspiration in the stories of these trailblazers. Their courage, determination, and unwavering commitment to justice continue to guide us in pursuing a fair and equitable criminal legal system.

According to the U.S. Courts, a third of active judges today are women. This statistic reflects a significant step forward, and yet, the struggle for gender equity continues. Having more diverse voices in the legal profession is paramount to fostering a just and equitable system for all.
At the Innocence Project, we honor the legacies of these remarkable women by anchoring our work in principles of equity and accountability. We recognize that a diverse and inclusive legal system is essential for dismantling systemic injustices and ensuring fairness.
This Women's History Month, let's celebrate our progress and acknowledge the challenges still ahead. Join us in paying tribute to the women who have paved the way and continue to inspire us to transform the criminal legal system.

The Innocence Project works to free the innocent, prevent wrongful convictions, and create fair, compassionate, and equitable systems of justice for everyone. Founded in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the organization is now an independent nonprofit. Our work is guided by science and grounded in anti-racism.
