UNIVERSITY DENIES TURNING POINT USA CHAPTER, TELLS STUDENTS “WE SILENCE VOICES ALL THE TIME IN THIS COUNTRY”

Turning Point USA and Alliance Defending Freedom filed a lawsuit against SUNY Cortland ([link removed] ) for allegedly violating students’ First Amendment rights ([link removed] ) by discriminating against the group’s viewpoint.

During the Fall 2023 semester, two students assembled a group interested in forming a Turning Point USA chapter at the university. The students complied with all the requirements necessary to become a recognized student organization.

However, when the students presented their request to the Student Senate, they were questioned for approximately 100 minutes before having their request denied. Students say the Senate “launched a planned assault on their views” and criticized Turning Point USA’s views on “gender identity, critical race theory, and race relations.”

The students later met with SUNY Cortland President Erik Bitterbaum, who discouraged them from applying for club status again. He also allegedly told the students, “We silence voices all the time in this country. That’s the tragedy and also the greatness of democracy.”

After TPUSA filed a lawsuit, the university’s Student Government Association’s review committee voted to overturn ([link removed] ) the Student Senate’s decision and allow the students to form a Turning Point USA chapter on campus. TPUSA’s lawsuit for violations of the First and Fourteenth Amendments is ongoing.

Turning Point USA is committed to EXPOSING indoctrination on college campuses across the country. The Dean’s List is the only freedom-minded university ranking website providing students with the information they need to make an informed decision about education.
