Dear John:

Just like that, the Washington Legislature adjourned last night, Sine Die. On time. And before the sun had set, for a change!

"Smooth, orderly and productive" is how one long-time observer described it.

It was the "short session" (60 days versus 105 in odd numbered years when the two-year operating budget is adopted). Yet progress was made in special education support, behavioral health support and a host of other areas.

We were pleased the legislature adopted bills of interest to our office. One, Senate Concurrent Resolution 8414, sets up the Joint Committee on Civic Health. I will have the honor to chair it as we engage the legislature in the important work of getting serious about our civic discourse.

Another – House Bill 2000 — expands the Legislative Committee on Economic Development & International Relations, which I also chair, and sets up a "parliamentary exchange" with British Columbia . That province's economy is becoming more intertwined with ours and we cannot neglect it anymore.

Modest improvements were made to housing policy, notably another big investment in affordable housing. But we have much more work to do. I must admit to some disappointment in this area. Not enough was done. We will just have to bear down going forward.

And hey! Yesterday also marked another trip around the sun for my beloved, Paula Fruci Heck. Sine Die and Paula's birthday! It doesn't get any better than that.

The session is done but it is time to go to work. We'll talk more later.

Warmest Regards,

Denny

P.S. Oh yes, recently I also got a third opponent in my reelection effort. It's going to be a busy year!
