Dear Friend,
Happy International Women’s Day! To kick off Women’s History Month, we’re honoring the record-breaking number of women political leaders holding office today.
While we can’t highlight every woman nationwide, we wanted to take time to acknowledge the history these trailblazers have made.
With the induction of the 118th Session of Congress, there have been many firsts - including its record number of women in office! To date, women make up 28% of all members of Congress – while this is far from equal representation, it displays major progress from even a decade ago.
128 women are currently serving in the House of Representatives, accounting for 29% of the total number. In the Senate, women make up 25 of the 100 seats – this number was held only once prior in the 116th Congress. Not only are these women running and winning at record rates, but they are also taking on leadership roles in Congress. Senator Patty Murray was sworn in as the first woman Senate president pro tempore in 2023.
