Happy International Women’s Day, friends!
Today, we’re celebrating the achievements the women’s movement has made worldwide, while also shining a light on how far we still have to go in the fight for equality.
So, to demonstrate just a fraction of the inequalities still impacting women across our country, let me share some quick stats with you:
- Women earn just $0.82 to every $1.00 a man makes (and even less for women of color).
- Nearly 1 in 4 women will obtain an abortion at some point in their life—and since Roe v. Wade was overturned, this puts millions of women in life-threatening situations.
- Every 1 in 3 women have experienced domestic violence.
- Women comprise nearly half of the workforce, but only 34% of STEM workers.
As a woman in politics, I know firsthand what it’s like to be dismissed and not taken seriously.
I was the first woman ever elected to represent MI-11 in Congress. And I ran my campaign with the hopes of inspiring women—especially young girls—to use their voice to stand up for what they believe in.
That’s why I voted YES to pass the Women’s Health and Protection Act to protect women’s rights; why I voted to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to abolish the wage gap; and why I'm an ardent supporter of a federal family leave program, a burden that too often falls on mothers.
That’s also why I will always keep pushing for more STEM education funding to help more girls enter one of Michigan’s most prominent industries.
International Women’s Day serves as a reminder that today—and every day—we must continue our commitment to protecting women.
So, if you’re with me, will you chip in $25 or whatever you’re able to keep me advocating for all of these important issues in Congress? [[link removed]]
