Dear team,

This International Women’s Day—and every day—with your support the Center for Reproductive Rights is fighting to protect and advance women’s rights across the globe.

We are celebrating the recent victory from France where lawmakers have enshrined the right to abortion in the constitution , but we know that there is still so much progress to be made. Here is some of the work we're doing across the world that is only possible with your support.

United States
Last night during his State of the Union address, U.S. President Joe Biden shared the story of one of our clients, Kate Cox, with the world. Kate was forced to flee Texas after politicians and judges denied her a lifesaving emergency abortion. Her case captured the world's attention and proved in real time that medical “exceptions" to abortion bans do not work. Right now, abortion is illegal in 14 U.S. states, leaving millions without access to care, but the Center is fighting hard to turn the tide. Latin America and the Caribbean
In Latin America and the Caribbean, we’re fighting for expanded sexual and reproductive rights protections for victims of rape. We joined forces with our partners in May 2019 to file cases against Nicaragua, Ecuador, and Guatemala before the UN Human Rights Committee over these countries’ failure to protect four girls who became pregnant after being sexually assaulted. The girls had little to no access to sexual health and reproductive services—including abortion—and were forced into pregnancies. We are awaiting a ruling. Africa
In Africa, we’re fighting for policies that prioritize the inclusion of pregnant learners, young women, and girls in education. After hearing arguments from the Center, the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child ruled in 2022 that the practice of expelling pregnant students from school violated the human rights of adolescent girls. This case challenged discriminatory policies, including mandatory pregnancy testing and the complete prohibition of adolescent girls from education post-childbirth. This week the Center submitted a joint statement [[link removed]] with other civil society organizations in Kenya firmly opposing recent statements made by Governor Kenneth Lusaka calling for the ban of pregnant learners from school which contradicts the constitution.
