The National Party

Dear John --

I promised New Zealanders that our Government would deliver on 49 actions in our first 100 days. I’m thrilled to confirm that we have done exactly that.

Today, we committed to five key health targets to drive better outcomes for New Zealanders and, with that, we rounded out our 100-day plan. 49 actions promised. 49 actions delivered.

These targets include faster cancer treatment, improved immunisation rates for kids, shorter stays in emergency departments, shorter waits for first specialist assessments, and shorter wait times for treatment.

This Government is unapologetically outcomes-driven and setting targets means the entire system is focused on delivering those outcomes. You can expect more targets to be set in the coming months to ensure every dollar is going towards better results for Kiwis.

I’m really proud of what our team has been able to deliver in our first 100 days and I’m determined to keep pushing ahead with the positive changes New Zealanders voted for at last year’s election.

Here are just some of the actions we’ve delivered for you through our 100-day plan:

  • Significant cuts to wasteful spending
  • The Reserve Bank refocused on reducing inflation
  • Fuel tax hikes cancelled for this term
  • The Ute Tax repealed
  • A new transport plan announced, including 15 new Roads of National Significance
  • Three Waters repealed
  • Labour’s prisoner reduction target scrapped
  • Legislation to crack down on gangs introduced
  • Primary and intermediate schools now required to teach an hour a day each of maths, reading and writing
  • Cell phones banned in classrooms from next term
  • Progress made on extending free breast cancer screening to those aged up to 74
  • Security bolstered in emergency departments to protect health workers.

Plus many, many more actions to rebuild our economy, restore law and order and deliver better health and education.

These actions are just the start in working to get New Zealand back on track, and I look forward to sharing with you what’s next soon.

We have a big job to turn our country around - but in just 100 days I'm confident our team has shown the drive and ambition we need to get New Zealand back on track.
