The Amazon rainforest is home to more than 10% of Earth's biodiversity and holds up to 20 years' worth of global carbon dioxide emissions.
For 65 million years, the Amazon has served as Earth’s carbon sink, absorbing billions of tons of carbon dioxide and weathering the effects of climate change - allowing humans to live here for thousands of years. It’s sometimes referred to as the “Earth’s lungs.”
Now due to warming temperatures, extreme droughts, deforestation and fires, the Amazon rainforest is at risk of releasing billions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere. This would be devastating, exacerbating global warming and further destabilizing all other ecosystems. Every acre of forest we lose makes combating climate change even more challenging.
It is critical that we preserve the Amazon rainforest now to avoid irreversible damage to our planet's carbon balance. We can’t delay action, John. Donate now to keep SEEC Members in Congress through this year’s election cycle, so they can fight to prevent us from reaching the Amazon’s tipping point.
