I’m a first-generation American and the proud daughter of a Mexican immigrant. My dad immigrated to the U.S. in 1950. He worked in the fields of the Rio Grande Valley, served two tours in Vietnam, and earned his U.S. citizenship.

He then spent the next three decades as a police officer, and it was this good-paying union job that provided my family a path into the middle class.

While we didn’t have a lot growing up, my family believed that through hard work, better was possible. It took me seven years to graduate college – and I juggled multiple jobs, from painting houses to pouring coffee – but I put in the hard work and earned that degree.

When my daughter was born, I felt the same determination that drove my parents: that I would do everything in my power to shape a stronger, more equitable future for my daughter and her generation.

That’s why as a legislator, I’m fighting every day to deliver on the issues that matter most to working families: affordable health care, a fair economy, and an environment that is protected and cherished for generations to come.

My family’s story is an American story – one where hard work can provide a path to a better life. And now, I’m fighting every day to ensure that every family has that same opportunity.

But, the reality is that the race here in OR-06 is, once again, shaping up to be one of the most competitive elections in the country. To defend this seat and continue delivering for Oregon in Congress, I’m going to need the support of this grassroots team.
