August Priority: We Need Asylum Reform
Congress is in recess, and when they return in September, they should return prepared to finally fix the crisis at our southern border. Congress must do three things:


- Secure the border
- Enforce current immigration laws
- Reform our asylum laws



Congress must start by approving funding to build more secure barriers along the border and implement a surveillance system that includes cameras, sensors, and drones. We also need additional funds for detention facilities, judges, prosecutors, and border patrol agents so that everyone apprehended for illegally crossing will be held throughout the duration of their proceedings.

Securing the border and enforcing our current immigration laws will reduce the incentives for individuals to immigrate illegally. Reforms to our immigration law can further reduce the incentives—in short, Congress needs to close asylum loopholes, and end catch-and-release for good.

Asylum seekers at the southern border should be required to claim asylum at the closest country to their home country instead of passing through Mexico to claim asylum in the United States. Other countries have skin in the game too. Congress should also legislate to allow accompanied children to remain with their parents while parents await asylum adjudication or prosecution of misdemeanor violations of immigration law.

Only with asylum reform, more funding for border security, and stricter enforcement of our laws, can we fully address the crisis at the southern border.
Why This Matters to Americans
Illegal immigration will be a top issue in 2020, and on some facets of the issue there is even consensus among Democrats, Republicans, and Independents.

In our survey of five swing states, 63% <[link removed]> of likely voters said “The migration problem at the U.S. border is a national emergency.”

According to our Congressional Battleground Survey, 36% <[link removed]> of likely Republican voters say that immigration is the “most important issue facing the country today.”

In our National Survey, we found:


- 54% <[link removed]> of likely voters said that “Illegal immigration affects my life.”
- 51% <[link removed]> say that priority should be given “to immigrants based on their skills” over those with family members in the U.S. (29% disagreed and 20% were undecided).
- 47% <[link removed]> of Republican voters list “overuse of social services” as the greatest challenge posed by illegal immigration. That number jumps to 70% when you factor in those that answered “all of the above.”
