Headaches? Fatigue? Did you know that all of these can be symptoms of endometriosis? Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 girls, yet it takes an average of eight doctors and 10 years to diagnose. Early diagnosis would be revolutionary. School nurses can help recognize symptoms. You can listen to the NASN School Nurse Chat episode Endometriosis Awareness and Education, which discusses endometriosis, its impact on adolescents, and the school nurse role. And, to celebrate International Women’s Day tomorrow and Endometriosis Awareness Month, NASN is partnering with Below the Belt to offer free access to the groundbreaking PBS film and accompanying Endometriosis Toolkit. Also available is the opportunity to earn 3.5 CEU Contact Hours from Northeastern University. Access the toolkit and film now through this Sunday, March 10, 2024. School Nurses: Untapped Resource to Combat Chronic Absenteeism A new study from the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing found that students with many partial-day absences often seek out school nurses as a source of comfort and support. The results show that school nurses have the potential to play a key role in addressing chronic absenteeism. NASN President Kate King said, "My primary focus — and a school nurse's primary focus — is that children are in school." The study and article demonstrate the importance of advocating for a more holistic understanding of the school nurse role and the need for a school nurse to be present in every school all day, every day.
