Governor Green understood early that the process of building housing has become so complicated and costly in Hawaii over the last few decades — fraught with unnecessary bureaucracy, impossible permitting processes, and prohibitive zoning rules — that we needed immediate action.
Recognizing the problem, Governor Green signed two Emergency Proclamations Relating to Housing during his first year in office, empowering the state’s leading housing experts to cut through red tape and approve new housing projects more quickly and easily.
Josh and his team immediately approved 10,800 new units of low income housing for struggling families and took action to reform the housing bureaucracy — since then approving or accelerating multiple new projects that will bring thousands of homes to teachers, nurses, firefighters, and working families across our state.
But building alone won’t solve our housing crisis — that’s why Josh will continue to find ways to make buying or renting a home more affordable in Hawaii, including cutting red tape, reducing regulatory costs, and speeding up approvals.
As Josh takes more actions to lower housing costs in our state, we will continue to keep you updated.
Thank you again for supporting Josh and being a part of Team Green.
Mahalo,
Team Green
