Haiti gang leader threatens 'civil war' if PM does not resign
(BBC)

A powerful alliance of gangs is threatening war and genocide if Haiti’s prime minister does not resign, and on Wednesday they blocked the leader’s plane from landing in Port-au-Prince.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry had to land in Puerto Rico after traveling to seek international security support amidst spiraling violence in the country. Henry, who took power after President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated, is also under increasing diplomatic pressure to make way for a transitional government.

Haiti is one of the lowest-ranked countries in the 2023 WJP Rule of Law Index (139 out of 142 countries and jurisdictions), ranking 140th on effective control of crime and 128th on lawful transition of power.

Ghana's president says anti-LGBTQ bill has not reached his desk
(Reuters)

Last week, members of Ghana’s parliament passed a strict anti-LGBTQ bill that would see anyone who identifies as LGBTQ potentially spend three years in prison. Thus far, President Nana Akufo-Addo has refused to sign the bill, citing an ongoing challenge in Ghana’s Supreme Court.

Close to $4 billion in international development aid earmarked for Ghana would be in jeopardy If the president ultimately signs the bill into law.

Ghana ranks 58 out of 142 countries and jurisdictions on equal treatment and absence of discrimination in the 2023 WJP Rule of Law Index. The country has experienced a 5-year decline in its fundamental rights score.

After years of legal discrimination, Poland's same-sex couples await civil union law
(NPR)

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has promised to introduce legislation in Poland’s parliament legalizing same-sex civil unions within his first hundred days in office.

The law is expected to be debated this month. Passage of this legislation would be momentous - just a few years ago, dozens of cities in the country proclaimed themselves to be unwelcoming of LGBTQ people by adopting the label “LGBT-Free Zones.”

Poland ranks 57 out of 142 countries and jurisdictions on equal treatment and absence of discrimination in the 2023 WJP Rule of Law Index.
